Naples

The Constant Princess

Naples is a projected acquisition in Catalina of Aragon’s account of Ferdinand II of Aragon’s ambitions, rather than a setting for action in the cited passages. Its significance lies in how Catalina reads her father’s territorial aims: as a long game that can shape alliances and affect the political interests of England as well as those of Spain.

A Projected Acquisition

Catalina places Naples within a wider program of expansion. She tells Arthur, Prince of Wales, that Ferdinand II of Aragon is determined to acquire Navarre and Naples and will not be satisfied with the existing reach of his realm. In the same account, she anticipates further ambitions in the southern and western regions of France, presenting Naples as one part of a continuing, outward-looking project rather than an isolated objective.

Naples and Diplomatic Leverage

When Catalina later explains Ferdinand II of Aragon’s alignment with Louis XII of France, she again identifies Naples, alongside Navarre, as a central aim. She expects the alliance to carry a high price and describes her father as a patient strategist who generally gets his way. The apparent alignment with an English enemy therefore does not, in her view, mean that Ferdinand has abandoned his own purposes.

Catalina also reframes the alliance from the English perspective. She argues that Ferdinand’s dealings with France keep the French occupied in the south and thus serve Arthur’s father. Naples matters here not only as a territory Ferdinand wants, but as part of Catalina’s explanation of why a foreign policy that disappoints the English court might still benefit it.

A Place Seen Through Ambition

The narrative presents Naples at a distance: Catalina speaks of it as a destination of policy, not as a place she or the other characters visit in these passages. No conquest, transfer of control, or outcome for the city is described. Instead, its recurring mention gives concrete focus to Catalina’s confidence that her father’s ambitions will continue to redirect alliances, while establishing her as an interpreter of the calculations behind them.
